When Judges talk about deviating from any of the rules, or policy documents, there is one phrase we always use: "Significant and exceptional circumstances." One of the examples given in the Infraction Procedure Guide, and the one that most often comes up in conversation, is "a table falling down."

2HG is a tricky format, not only because it has additional rules and more complex interactions, but given that we don't judge it as often as other formats, it's easy to forget what we have already learned. This article's main purpose is to help judges prepare for an upcoming 2HG event.

Friends, I am happy to state that it is a fantastic time to be an Elder Dragon Highlander enthusiast. Interest in the format is very strong. Wizards actually mentions EDH games as part of the Public Events schedule at Pro Tours - not to mention its inclusion in the Comprehensive Rules - and it's become more likely that you can find a few one-hundred-card decks in your local playgroup than not.

Now that we're immersed in Zendikar, I really like this set. It's a lot of fun, without having to be the most technically minded player at times. Fun sets like this usually have me thinking about building new decks, and that's something that I haven't done in over a year. However, when I think of construction I tend to be looking for cards that will fit into a Two-Headed Giant deck first and foremost.

In a game of Magic, especially in multiplayer, the game can seem somewhat hectic. Indeed, this was something that attracted me to Magic in the first place. There's a fine balance that must be maintained between theory and practice. If you spend too much time doing, then there are many missed opportunities to better understand what you're doing and why you're doing it. If you spend too much time thinking, too much time theorizing about your potential actions, then it's easy to overthink yourself into the trap of doing absolutely nothing and letting all that theory rot from disuse. So it goes with Magic - both in playing, and in judging.

Magic is a useful game in that it tells us who our opponent is, what we're fighting against. More often than not, it's Faeries (or Kithkin, or whatever the Hot New Deck is nowadays). In my experience, Regionals tends to bring in a bunch of players with a wide range of ability. For some people this is the biggest tournament they will play in (unless a GP shows up close enough). 2009-01-26 The Riki Rules - A Tale of Two DQs Starcitygames (en) Riki Hayashi
A Disqualification is the worst possible way for a player's tournament to end. Check that. Getting dragged out of the tournament site in handcuffs by the police is worse, which I have seen happen, so a DQ is at the very least second worst.
2009-01-19 The Riki Rules - The Top Ten Things You Need to Know About Extended Starcitygames (en) Riki Hayashi
Battlestar Galactica kicked off its final half season yesterday. Unfortunately, I missed it because I was in Los Angeles as the Magic Pro Tour kicked off its hopefully not-final season with an Extended Grand Prix. But before BSG started its historic final run, the Sci-Fi channel ran a half-hour special with the top ten things to get new viewers caught up on the show. Let's see if we can do the same with Magic…

2009-01-12 The Riki Rules - Anatomy of a Slow Play Starcitygames (en) Riki Hayashi
Slow Play is one of the most difficult calls for a Judge to make because of the subjectivity of the infraction. The truth of the matter is that Slow Play happens a lot more often than it gets penalized for. Too many Judges are reluctant to pull the trigger on giving the penalty, figuring the player is "just about to make a play. I'll give him just a few more seconds."

The Judge seminars were all informative, with some good clean fun mixed in. The high point for me was during John Carter's “Q&A with the New Judge Coordinator” seminar when Paul Smith from the UK asked Carter what he thought of my column. The response was pure gold: “As it turns out, Riki does in fact rule.”

2008-12-29 The Riki Rules - Judging in Memphis Starcitygames (en) Riki Hayashi
I don't remember exactly when I decided to Judge at Worlds in Memphis. Given the pace I've been on this year, it might seem like a no-brainer to attend a domestic Pro Tour. (Is Worlds a Pro Tour or not? I've heard it go both ways.) But with Kyoto being the first Pro Tour of 2009 and me with some relatives that needed visiting in Japan, vacation days were looking tight.
2008-12-02 The Riki Rules - Chatter of the Judge Starcitygames (en) Riki Hayashi
I've been bombarded with a variation of one question all week: "What do you think of Zac Hill's article?" Zac's article, "Sealed Redux, and a Little Bit of "Judge!"" lit a firestorm of discussion and controversy that followed me all over the Internet, where I've had e-mail exchanges, PM exchanged, IM chats, IRC discussions, and even a Facebook chat on the subject...
2008-12-15 The Riki Rules - Judge Potpourri Starcitygames (en) Riki Hayashi
Obviously, everyone knows that lying to a Judge is a seriously bad thing. What sometimes slips through the cracks is how equally serious it can be to lie to your opponent or to intentionally ignore infractions until it is convenient to do so. Like a broken record, if you discover something wrong, you need to... (wait for it)... call a Judge.

2008-12-01 The Riki Rules - Grand Prix: Atlanta Starcitygames (en) Riki Hayashi Report
There was a DQ in the last round of Day 1 involving noted Brazilian Pro Willy Edel and a local player. As the Monty Python boys taught us, three is the number of minutes thou shalt have to shuffle before each game, no more, possibly less. At the three minute mark you must present your deck. If you delay in presenting your deck after three minutes, you should receive a Slow Play infraction. I say “should” because this is one of those penalties that will almost never be given out.

Of the major documents that govern tournament Magic, the Penalty Guide is unique.
