One of the tricky issues for the greater judge community is the subject of compensation and rewarding judges for their efforts. I think most people are aware that judges get boosters from the latest set when judging a prerelease or local PTQ. Slightly less well known is the fact that judges get special foil cards each year - judge foils.

How do you accept failure? How do you improve on your own mistakes? How do you manage frustration? These are difficult issues to address, and ultimately my inability to accept failure was the reason I lost interest in playing the game some years ago. If I go to an event and my chances on having fun depend on the result, then it's likely I'll return home feeling miserable far too often.

I'm afraid to say this is not the revival of the old Chris Richter articles to solve your rules questions, but thankfully, the forums have a wonderful section for just that issue. No, this is a whole other kind of frequently asked questions. As a judge, I get a lot of questions that don't involve the rules, or policy. Many players can be very social with us, and want to get to know us, and learn about what we do.

2010-04-02 The Justice League - Avoiding Misplays Outside Your Match Star City Games (en) Kevin Binswanger Education & Development
Judges watch a lot of Magic. That's one of the main things we do at tournaments. At my last PTQ, there were 119 players playing 341 matches of Magic. So we also see a lot of mistakes. While you can make a misplay within a tournament and lose for it, you can also fall behind for mistakes made outside of a game of Magic. My goal here is to present the most obvious of these mistakes, so you can avoid ever making them again.

Several players and I got into a long discussion of bribery and collusion last week. People seemed confused - and since these things can get you into serious trouble quickly, that's bad. Let look at what's illegal, and where the boundaries are.

Matteo took the chance to reflect on what he had done and achieved to be considered for sponsorship to Pro Tour-Honolulu, and realized that it wasn't as much as he and other judges considered that was needed for a PT sponsorship; and, after all, everything he did was stuff he enjoyed a lot doing! Readers of my previous article on Pro Tour: Austin are familiar with how important socialization is to the Pro Tour experience - as much so for judges as it is for players. In my first article for StarCityGames.com, I'd like to write about what promises to be the event of the year in Spain: the European Legacy Grand Prix. 2010-01-29 The Justice League - New Year, New Prerelease Star City Games (en) Nicholas Sabin Work & Run a Tournament
Prereleases tend to hit a sweet spot in terms of the best atmosphere for a tournament: casual players come to crack open new packs and play around with cards they've never played with before, experienced players come to trade or draft (in hopes of accumulating packs for later, private drafts), and we judges get to work our way through the wrenches thrown into our rules knowledge by new mechanics and peculiar interactions.
